The times and strides of a game changer...
CGI Muhammad Babandede MFR |
Comptroller General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede MFR has been a pioneer in identifying and fostering development and reforms of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
Since he assumed the role of Comptroller General in 2016 he has made significant impact in terms of NIS offerings, service to the public and welfare of officers.
He does not discriminate, he is a “people person” who carries everyone along. He holds high his belief in discipline and balances his passion for work and service to humanity.
Always ready to follow issues to conclusive end by ensuring that they are investigated and erring officers are punished just as well as he rewards hardworking men. His crisis management and conflict resolution tentacles are top-notch.
All through his dispensation, he had a smooth run with the Ministry of Interior, working hand-in-hand with the Honorable Minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola to chart an all improved course for the Nigeria Immigration Service. A bridge-building synergy which (despite resource constraints) has now led to successful achievements and general improvements at the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Some of the achievements of his dispensation include:
The NIS gala night: An annual event designed to honour hardworking and outstanding officers, as well as recognise other valiant officers; especially those who died in the line of duty for their bold commitment and significant contributions to the service.
The NIS technology building which houses the information sharing unit where NIS data and intelligence are synchronised with other intelligence agencies such as the FBI, interpol etc.
Ensuring that the service is actively involved in repatriation and rehabilitating Nigerians who run into troubled waters abroad.
His forward-‘thinkingness’ also brought about the restructuring and easing passport application processes across the globe to the extent of setting up express passport centres in-order to deliver a more efficient service to Nigerians.
His era is big on diversity, equality and inclusion as he encouraged open-door operations across-board. Cutting out bottlenecks by ensuring a transparent recruitment process and ensuring that the female gender is well represented across the hierarchy within the system. Also, posting 25% of new in takes made up of young, smart and technologically driven officers across important NIS offices around the globe.
He adds yet another stride by overhauling the NIS to run a functional online system that would block leakages and unnecessary estacode, as well as eradicating corrupt practices within the NIS.
He also, launched temporary passport in place of emergency travel certificate (ETC) for Nigerians in diaspora who are without valid passports and wish to make a quick return to the country.
Driving growth through trainings and activities that promote inclusion. Engineering team to be self-aware by prioritizing their duties with the understanding that they are representatives of the NIS as a government brand.
Receptive of criticism and very open to learning, Mr. Babandede sets himself apart as a distinguished service chief and a leader. CGI Babandede continues to work tirelessly towards achieving his vision to reform the NIS for greater good of until his last day in office.
He has set the pace for an improved an effective system which leaves his successor with no option but to thrive to sustain these achievement.
After 36 years of meritorious service he retires with his head and shoulders high as one who took the bull by the horn to reform the Nigeria Immigration Service, turning it from its previously notorious image of widely deplorable into a top-tier government agency.
