Ex-president of Brazil Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva popularly known as Lula has been taken to prison in Curitiba to serve a 12-year sentence for corruption.
Lula who was well rated for his achievements as President was charged and sentenced for corruption. Lula ignored an order to turn himself in by Friday as he was surrounded by thousands of supporters at the metalworkers’ union building in Sao Bernardo do Campo. Though his supporters had resisted his arrest and refused him to turn himself in, the 72 year-old surrendered to authorities on saturday after a stand-off with police.
Lula who was initially found guilty of corruption and money laundering in July 2017 and sentenced In January after an appeals court unanimously upheld the charges against him, has said his prosecution is politically motivated to prevent him from running for presidency during the forthcoming election in october, which he was likely to win.
Mr. da Silva’s appeal to remain free while appeals of the conviction were considered was rejected after the Supreme Federal Court upheld a 2016 ruling that allows trial judges to jail defendants after an initial appeal has been rejected and issued a warrant to take him into custody.
