The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Health has declared a ban on codeine syrups across the country. While codeine ( containing ) syrups can no-longer be bought/sold over-the-counter (OTC), production and importation has been banned with immediate effect.
The Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole has ordered the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to endure enforcement by supervising the recall for labeling and audit monitoring of all codeine containing cough syrups in the country.
In a statement by the Assistant Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Health, Olajide Oshundun “Federal Ministry of Health has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.
This development was triggered by a recent investigative report by BBC bringing to light the high rate of drug abuse in Northern Nigeria and the danger it poses to the society.
