The Inspector General of
Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris for the second time snubs Nigerian Upper Legislative
Chamber’s invitation to appear before the senate to explain the police manhandling
of Senator Dino Melaye as well as other security concerns in the country.
The IGP was instead
represented by the DIG after Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan announced that the IGP
was unavailable explaining that the IGP had gone to Kaduna on an official
assignment. Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Abu Ibrahim also
confirmed that a letter of invitation was extended to the IGP who failed to
show up.
This development did not
go down well with the senators as Deputy Senate leader, Bala Ibn’Nallah
expressed disappointment in the IGP’s conduct describing it as an embarrassment
to the senate.
The Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki urged lawmakers to exercise patience
over the matter and tasked the Committee on Police Affairs to ensure that the
IGP appears at a later date.
Meanwhile, embattled
Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, was today
arraigned by the police before a magistrate court in Wuse zone 2, Abuja.
The senator who was brought to court in a stretcher and granted #90m bail by the court, was arrested by the SARS and subsequently detained and charged to court over allegations bothering on criminal conspiracy.
